I believe you can run up to 10.2.8 on a Beige, but I agree that it's getting a bit too old to be usable these days.
I'm comfortably running 10.2.8 on a beige 300 now - and other than it being a good bit slower than my other machines, it's quite usable. I do plan to replace it in the coming months (just waiting for new machines at this point) but I'll still keep it up and running at home for my kids.
there is a hack under development to allow you to run panther on the beige, but it breaks a few things in order to do so, so I've shy'd away from it for now. If they get it to work 100%, I might try it. Othewise... 10.2.8 forever.
unless there's a 10.2.9 ;)

Windows Movie Maker should be free, and it is included in Windows XP SP 3 as far as I know.

MacRumors used to use the Facebook Like button (for the past few days) and switched over to the Share button.

So the wife and i have been avid windows users for years. And decided we would start checking into some low end macbooks. Well we ended up getting a aluminum unibody 13'er with 4GB Ram and 320gb HD, couldnt possibly be happier, while the same specs on a windows machine can be had for about $1000 less, i couldnt be happier. Slick machine, smooth, great build quality, everything works as advertised. Build quality is so impressive. I have friends with the white mac's that appear plastic, but still impressive. But i am just astounded by my aluminum Mac. First post, dont bash me. ready to see what 10.7 is all about. Prolly remove the windows desktop next. she bought an iPhone within a few days of buying this mac. I have had one all alone. Sorry about the lengthy first post.

those are the same until you get to the 40GB 4G. I believe that one gets thicker. Not sure about the 30 GB The 30GB and 40GB 3G are the same thickness, (0.11" thicker than the 10/15/20) and the 40GB 4G is just a touch thinner.
However, Mactracker lists the 10/15/20GB 3G as 0.62"/15.7mm, and the 20GB 4G as 0.57"/15.7mm. That just doesn't seem right...

Can't help you much with garage band, I use Logic. However, just stick with it. Once you catch on it is a very rewarding experience. For plugins I recommend iDrum. It is fun and fairly easy to work around. There is even a version of it for the iPhone. http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/idrum/ Once you have all that down upgrade to logic and you will be blown away by all that your mac can do.;)

You will have plenty of room, I am not going to waste time waffling, but I think you have the right idea completely, just go for it as mentioned.
Partition the 2nd drive as suggested, use the 190GB for all your production.
I would then keep a time machine of this entire 250gb drive incase anything goes wrong.

Anyone using this software? I am having some issues with mysql in OS 10.4 Server and wanted to see if this really works.
No I just posted it cause I thought it might work. ;)
I was using it for more than 3 months and hosting my own website on my mini with no problems whatsoever. It even gives you a little gui to start/stop the servers and stuff, but having a working knowledge of Apache and MySQL always helps...
Also, i wouldn't recommend installing more than one copy of MySQL, so if you are going to use xampp, uninstall your first copy.

I have the same issue too. now every time I open a YouTube link, I'll pull up the app switcher tray while in the YouTube app and X out safari to reset it.
I have the same problem as well...It started on both my Ipad and Ipad after the iOS 4.3 update. What I do is just touch the screen with the blank Safari page and it will automatically close and reopen back to the page you were on...Hopefully this glitch is corrected with the 4.3.2 update that is coming soon.

I started with Fink, then switched to macports because it seemed to have more recent ports. What is the advantage of homebrew over macports?
It doesn't download and compile packages and tools already present on the system. This makes it smaller and faster, but less robust, since an update from apple could potentially break dependencies. Macports is self contained in the /opt folder.

Hello, I was editing a document with some Japanese and my mac got set to this language. I walked away from the computer and now it's only allowing me to type in Japanese when I try and log back in. Is there a hotkey combo that will allow me to toggle back to English? Thanks
Edit: After I typed the answer below, I found that this is actually a Catch 22-type of problem. You need to set "Show input method at log in" in the Accounts/Log-in Options in System Preferences, but you cannot do that until you are loged in ???.
Anyone know how to get around this? May have to boot up from the System DVD and change the password. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274 "Resetting the original administrator account password"
1. At log in, the language used is as set in the System Preferences, Language and Text, Language -- the system uses the language on the top of the list on the left side. I don't know what t do if you have the system set to show the log in screen. Can you use the mouse and the icon flag/hiragana icon up to the right on the menu bar to select the American flag (English)?
2. On a Japanese keyboard, there is an English and Japanese key on the right and left sides of the space bar. I ssume you have and American or British keyboard, so that doesn't help.
Normally, the hot key to set the language used is Command+Space, but that is set to pop up Spotlight, so go to the System Preferences, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts, Spotlight, and uncheck both boxes.
You can also mouse up to the top right, (next to the sound indicator) and click on the English flag/Hiragana (あ) and select the language there (depends on what is set in the Language and Text, Input sources dialog box. Set two, English and Kotoeri, switch between them manually using the flag/hiragana icon, then try using the Command+Space hot key. Should work alright now.
You may have to search the Apple database for more info on switching to English at the log-in screen.

Which say: Use the System Preferences from the Apple Menu, follow the instructions as shown above.

The classic software dilemma: Do it for free but spend some time learning; or pay a few bucks for ease of use.
I'd suggest googling some more. You should find a good rsync tutorial that can walk you through the various options.

I thought as Grapher is so complex and functional if you know what you are doing that it's worth creating a guide (http://guides.macrumors.com/Using_Grapher), it's not great so far but using the math mode button at the top I don't get equations, (which are kinda needed for this topic ;) ) can we get math support added please?

It's happened to me as well, for a couple times. Seems like either when the iPad goes to sleep, or the iPhone goes to sleep, the link needs to be re-established by turning off/on the personal hotspot feature.

I can't access mine either. A few hours at most I can understand, but this is ****** lame for a pay-service. Giving more information would be the polite thing for Apple to do ...
