I'm just about ready to make the leap to Apple/OSX from the PC world.
I'm the computer "guru" in my circle and seem to spend most of my time doing preventative maintenance and disaster relief on friend's computers from all of the crap that PC's are prone to. After a few dozen full re-installs, virus excorcisms, spyware-ectomies, in the last few months, I'm just finally sick of it.
It makes me sad that one has to be a "guru" to effectively run Windows for any period of time. They have made a huge leap from Win98 to XP, and I like the interface, but the bloated underbelly is still a wretched piece of work. If you look anywhere for tips on how to run Windows, you'll find that you are directed to all sorts of tweaks and registry edits in order to make it do what you want. Bah!
I currently dual-boot WinXP Home and Mandrake Linux, so I can see the benefits of a Unix based, ported OS like OSX. I have also messed around with a relative's iMac (which I recommended she get for photo editing), and I really like what I see.
I also just bought an iPod, and am in bliss with the new Windows iTunes, further clinching my decision to switch.
The new iBooks came out just a bit ago, and while they are compelling, I'm gonna save up and do it right. I'm going for a PowerBook, but haven't completly decided on the size.
I'm thinking 12" PB, since a laptop/notebook is supposed to be small. If I need a bigger display, I can always hook it up to my 17" Planar w/ DVI.
I'm going to use it for all of my mainstream computing needs, ie. email, surfing, office, photography, music. I'll keep my screamin fast PC for the games, like BF1942 and HL2 whenever it comes out, but once I get the Mac, I'm going to do a minimal re-install of XP so the gaming is as fast as it can be. I'll use the rest of the HD for storage for my Mac stuff, being on a 802.11b network. Kinda like a server that you can play games on. :)

Yes you are tight. I have an external drive and time machine. I am going to copy the folders to both. I am wondering if after I copy them and then delete them from events if I wanted to use them for Imovie I would be able to imprt them from external drive back to event if needed.
thanks for your patience

I just loaded XP on my mac laptop, without bootcamp. Most everything seems fine so far except I can't create any wireless network. And there are several devices under device manager that are in error. Is this the reason for running bootcamp? Also, do I need to install bootcamp and then re-install xp, or can I load bootcamp without reloading XP? (I assume the prior).
Thanks,
Clayton

Didn't 02 Start selling them for 169? If that's the case, I wouldn't say much more than 169 :p
I advise you to put a one day auction in on eBay, as Hustle quite rightly pointed out, the value on Monday will drop very quickly.

I have two of them. Make an offer, good condition... a year or so old on the one, maybe, 6 mo on the other one.
Lemme know. I'll be in Portland in a day, Seattle in a week. More than welcome to meet up anywhere in between tomorrow or so.
Not my picture, but they look like this:

They come in apple boxes if that matters. woot

Why not just pay the $18.00 and get it over with? Honestly, $18.00 isn't bad at all. It's really nothing.
Because that $18 becomes $25 in the future...and on and on it goes.
It's a purely profit move by all the cell phone carriers especially if you order online and get zero help "setting up" you phone.
Tmobile USA is even worst. $35 for upgrade fees.
What exactly are they doing to justify this upgrade fee?
That being said they stopped waiving my upgrade fees after 2009.

Subclass your views that you want to be touchable and add the "touch" code to those sub-classed new "custom" UIViews. Take the code out of your primary view controller.
Basically, you create a new Objective C class and make it a UIView instead of a NSObject class. Then, just add your view via code as you normally would. It will act exactly like a regular view, but all the touch events for it will be sent to your custom class.

hey so I was thinking that since i have a 500gb external hard drive and would like to use it as a backup for my internal 160gb hard drive and that I should use time machine. well due to that my machine only has a 160gb internal HD I don't want to dedicate the entire 500gb's to time machine. so I was thinking of partitioning 165gb's for time machine and the rest in another partition to just use for whatever. now my problem is how would I go about doing this? and so that time machine always backs up to the 165gb partition.
also that I could access both partitions easily. but first is this even possible? is it not recommended? and not a good idea?
also if possible could I make two 165gb partitions and one with the remaining 170gb's and use both 165gb partitions as time machine back ups? that way I could back up two computers to one drive on separate partitions and also have 170 for whatever I need it for?

I have a .m4v movie burned on a data dvd-r. I wanted to play it on my ps3 but it comes up as "corrupt data". This has happened to me before so I change the extension to .mp4 and it usually works. This time i'm not having any luck. Oddly the file works fine when i play it from a flash drive. Any idea why it isnt working from the disk?

Donate it to the kids in your hospital.
Now that's an idea in the spirit of the season. I'm sure someone with Eric's resources can absorb such a relatively small loss for such a wonderful reason?

vga to vga cable and proceeded to connect this to my samsung lcd tv. The white screen comes up and the circular thingy spins for a bit, and the Apple start up sound happens. Then the only thing that happens is a small bit of writing that writes mode not supported!
Your mini does not support your Samsung TV resolution. G4 minis are known to be picky about displays. Try reset PRAM but I doubt that it will help.
You can also try different connection type, via DVI to HDMI cable/adapter.

"Phone shoppers can stop by the store early:
7 a.m. on Thursday, June 24, or
8 a.m. on Friday, June 25."

Sweet!! :D :D I guess I have OCD...I usually stick to the intended burning speed just for the same reason you won't push it...cost and having to end up with coasters! I hear you on those crazy prices.

I've been using the iPhone headphones only because they come with, and for the mic/sound control. Now they're starting to go and I'm looking for a pair of similar earphones with mic/control to replace, as I didn't see the point in spending $40 on a pair of bad earbuds.
The thing is, I have trouble keeping them in my ears, so I was trying to find something that goes around it. The first choice was Powerbeats by Dre as they have the style I need with a control&mic pod, but I understand the marketing hype. Also, reading reviews from various places, another issue with them were DOA's and poor assembly (parts breaking, control coming loose, and whatnot).
I'm not sound engineer, or audiophile, nor is my budget too big, but I was looking for a pair of similar earbuds thats sound at least decent since there is no need for me to purchase studio quality earphones (if.. those exist?).
In a nutshell:
A pair of earphones with this style -

with a control / mic thats compatible with the iPhone 4. Quality at LEAST better than the Apple ones that are now crapping out on me (the balance of the music is shifting to the left side).

Hi folks,
This is confusing me. I've done this before without issue, but I transferred 19 MiniDV tapes onto Mac using iMovie into DV format (while I edited another project on my other mac in FCP).
My client could only play some of the files on his Windows machine (win7) using Quicktime. Then he may have deleted Quicktime and now Windows Movie Maker has taken over and changed the default file opening so he can't open the others.
Yes, I do have a copy of the files on my computer.
I saw this suggestion from Apple's board, but I don't seem to have this option of dv-avi in Quicktime (7) Pro?
" Export "Movie to AVI" and use the DV Stream format.
This makes a .dv file inside and AVI container which will work with Movie Maker. "
Should I try exporting with QuickTime Pro as AVIs? Would that work on a PC?
Other clients have used the DV files so I'm a little confused why this client can't ?
Any help would be hugely appreciated.
Cheers,
keebler

I wrote a review about the Synology DS411j a couple of months ago. HERE (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1117716&highlight=411j)is the link. Before I sold my MBP, I had my iMac and MBP both using Time Machine on it. I never had an issue with deletion of files. I had it set to a high quota though, but it never crossed 600GB on the NAS total.
Synology makes smaller NAS units that have the same software as the one I reviewed. They have both a 2-bay and a single bay. Benefit to an extra bay with another drive is that you have redundancy in case one of the drives fails. I also have a USB hard drive attached and it backs up the entire NAS twice a week.
