I am not sure about other states, but in CA, Law Enforcement is specifically required to announce DUI checkpoints and provide an alternative route. Asking to have these applications removed from app stores contradicts the law regarding DUI checkpoints. Gotta love Politicians. Write a law then contradict it. Awesome.

It is the same in Florida, DUI checkpoints are held to be constitutional where there is notice of when they will be operational, what traffic will be affected and the notice is published before they are set up. I would imagine some of these apps rely on notice in the newspaper in addition to community reporting. But who cares about that whole 4th Amendment thing. :(

So Michael Dell publicly stating that Steve Jobs should close the doors and return the money to the investors is not dumping?

And which tv ad is the one where Apple is dumping on Dell or HP? I must have missed that one, I would like to see it too!

Michael Dell as a PERSON made those comments. Since then he has said that he would sell Mac OS X in a heartbeat. The public doesn't hear those comments. We hear them, but not the general public.

I am talking about messages the general public does see: magazine and TV ads.

Apple's ads are about PCs being bad and Macs being good.

They don't say Dell or HP. But who makes PC's?

I have never seen a PC manufacturer put out an ad that attacks Macs.

Environmental activist group Greenpeace was ejected from London's Mac Expo yesterday, after various other exhibitors complained about the group's activities at the show.

The group had purchased a small both with contract terms to only hand out leaflets within their assigned area and to not take photographs at other stands. The Register got in touch with MacExpo marketing director Matt Denton (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/10/26/greepeace_ejected_from_mac_expo/print.html) who said "It was a valid stand with a valid message... they breached their contract."

Greenpeace does not deny having passed out fliers beyond their booth (http://weblog.greenpeace.org/makingwaves/archives/2006/10/we_love_our_macs_but_mac_expo.html), but insists that the reaction was "over the top" in a statement to MacRumors. Greenpeace is vowing to return to the expo tomorrow to continue their 'Green my Apple (http://www.greenmyapple.org)' campaign.

Greenpeace recently rated Apple the 4th worst tech company in their guide to greener electronics (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060829114739.shtml).

I'm getting a 17" 2 ghz C2D iMac... Sounds exciting with all that speed! I don't know what to do with it! I guess my iTunes visualizations will be smoother, and I'll have the Dashboard ripple effect.
$1200K for a little eye candy? Woo-hoo! (Seriously, though, well worth the $ over an eMac G4 1GHz)

The overall score was 10% better in the new model

That's the bottom line, folks. Not a huge performance improvement, by any means. Anyone trading in a Yonah iMac for one of these Meroms has got to be nuts. If you are looking for any type of performance improvement, wait a year or two to upgrade.

Why is everyone saying that Aperture 2.0 announcement is too little???

Photokina is all about *photo*. Aperture is about digital *photo* workflow. Its workflow features were pretty groundbreaking a year ago. Yes, it was buggy before first update. Yes, it was slow, and still is too some extent. But the features they showed -- autostacking, the loupe, the library -- are *fantastic*. They had a year to improve -- why not hold a big event to show it off!

No one would say that Adobe hosting an event to show new version of Photoshop would be to little, right? Same goes for Apple.

I'm desperately waiting for the update. If AP update (2.0, 1.5 -- whatever) improves speed on new Mac Pros, my order for a MP + AP goes right in. And $3.5K go to pay for it.

Don't get me wrong, MAD is a very great organization, but kids aren't supposed to drink at all.

Don't be kind -- MADD is a prohibitionist organization that has moved so far away from it's original mission that even the founder no longer has anything to do with it. They've turned into a bunch of loonies who are constantly pushing to stay relevant by crusading against the legal right to drink in this country.

They've brought the per se intoxication level down to .08, and they're continuing for it to be lower.

Your first point is intriguing and has me thinking too, however your 2nd is not too far from being "Apple". Apple has used code names for years. It is a known fact and something that is well documented throughout the web at credible sites like folklore.org and the likes run by former Apple employees.

Unless you were actually commenting on the "pre-announcement™" itself and not the codename

Yeah, I think they want people to download content starting today knowing that they'll be able to watch it on their nice big flat screen tv in the living room soon.

Steve jobs said "nice big flat screen tv" a lot during the itv intro, didn't he?

I would love to have a red iPod, but I don't know why we would ever give money to help fight AIDS on a continent where the people take NO precautions to prevent themselves from getting AIDS... I mean, sure many children are born with it in Africa, but for soooo many adults, they could prevent the spread if they would just be monogamous.

So there, I solved AIDS for free, no Oprah, no Bono, no Ipods. Just have sex only within a lifetime committed relationship and AIDS is all but gone in one generation!

I'll stick to my black aluminum iPod nano, anyhow. I just hope 10% of the proceeds didn't go to research finding cures for the black plague... or frostbite...

Thank you Captain Obvious. Next you'll tell me that water is generally wet. I'll bet you know people who have had sex outside a monogamous relationship, and you probably live outside of Africa. While you're solution, if put into perfect practice, would "solve" the problem, this solution is not even workable in more modern societies, much less those where the local healer has more credibility and less reliable information than the Doctors Without Borders or Peace Crops volunteers. Part of the problem with AIDS in Africa is the belief that men who have sex, whether consensual or not, with a virgin girl will cure themselves of AIDS. So of course the focus in on women and children. Treat and support the women, so they can help raise the children resulting from these unwanted sexual encounters, and educate the children, boys and girls alike, about the realities of the disease.

The San Diego news says the robbers were shooting at him, so I think his life was in danger. :-) 40 rounds of exchanged fire.

Chula Vista is NOT La Jolla.

If you don't want to be shot, don't rob a store and better yet don't rob a store carrying a gun with other people carrying guns.

I'm as pro gun rights as anyone, but this sounds like a problem for the security guard. Unless that guard's life was in danger, there was no reason to shoot anyone, especially in the head. The placement of that shot was no accident.

That being said, I'm sure there are a lot of facts we don't know. Innocent until proven guilty, of course.

The MBPs could have DisplayPort 1.2 if it were not for the damned connector merge.

The mini-display port connector is part of the DisplayPort 1.2 standard and is seemingly seeing wide adoption from PC laptop and display makers.

The DisplayPort 1.2 specification requires support for DisplayPort 1.1a on mini-display ports, but I don't see anything that precludes it supporting 1.2 signalling.

Can you point to an article that details how Thunderbolt is a problem for this? The Thunderbolt controller, when connected to a DisplayPort 1.2 (only) display, could fall back to DisplayPort mode like it does now, could it not?

Intel should have stood their ground on Thunderbolt... Would have pushed component manufacturers to make more Thunderbolt devices, now we're going to have a mish mash, and those of us with Macs are getting the shaft because we won't get USB 3.0 from Apple...

I wish they had announced that IvyBridge was USB 2.0 only, but this delays USB 3.0 adoption by a year.

There's been strong support for Thunderbolt, so that year might be enough to kill USB 3.0, which hasn't exactly taken off.

If that's not true, then where were you hearing the term "app store" used before apple trademarked it? No question there are multiple stores selling apps now, but if it was a generic term then there should be examples of use before the trademark filing. Example?

I didn't need to hear it before. It was always generic.

Looks as if the data is more or less for AT&T's purposes than for Apple's. A lot of the data is in a grid form on the map, possibly using tower triangulation to determine signal issues in a given area.

The dates coincide with the release of iOS 4 for sure.

Still not cool that this is being pushed to backups and appears to keep a never-ending history on the device unless restored and set up as new.

i thought this from my first post, but his join date is 08, and he's a regular. that is what has me thinking that what he is saying is really how he thinks/acts.

I don't doubt that he goes around cutting people off at dangerous speeds. That screams of trying to make himself feel like less of a loser.

It's all the other crap that I think is BS...the money, connected family members, SAT score, all of the volunteering, Harvard. Complete lies. The kid is sitting in his basement listening to death metal (no offense to those who like that kind of music) as we speak and cursing all of the girls in his class because nobody would be caught dead at Prom with him.

Both financially and from a space and energy consumption point of view, an Apple TV or an Airport Express is a more efficient solution for this. Apple tends to support only the efficient and simple solutions, not the cumbersome ones.

Agreed. I never said that this is the most elegant solution.
But why should I get extra hardware (environmentally unfriendly) when I have my Mac on most of the time anyway. You know, I already have a computer (connected to speakers) so computer + Airport Express is more energy/money/space inefficient than a computer alone.

You know all well that the router is not free, you pay for through your monthly payments. The fact that your provider does not offer a cheaper service without such hardware freebies is just unfortunate.

If I renew my service, I pay the same money and of course I don't get new hardware. Hardware freebies are for new customers/connections in many services other than internet connections. Subscribe to a satellite tv service for example, get a free dish. This is beyond me anyway, it's a standard policy for all providers where I live. I just got this modem/router with my subscription and so far it works fine. No need to replace it.

Would you be happy if Apple included a free Airport Express with all Macs (but naturally increased the price for the Mac)? There is nothing free, at least in the physical world (the digital world can be very close to free, see iOS apps).

This makes no sense. Not everyone needs or desires an Airport Express. I never asked Apple for free hardware.

So, how much do think Apple is asking for licensing their Airplay technology, I'd guess at most between $5-10.

Do they license Airplay technology to software developers? I don't think so.
Show me an app on the Mac App Store (or wherever) that acts like an Airport Express and i'll buy it at once.

Is your Mac (the one connected to your sound system) really cheaper than an Airport Express?
And if this is your only Mac, you can just use the Remote app to play the music on it from your iOS device.

How can you possibly compare a Mac to an Airport Express? I bought a Mac to have a COMPUTER not to stream music wirelessly.
What you should think about is: How hard is for a Mac to act like an Airport Express with the proper software? It shouldn't.
Why it there no software like this? Apple does not want to.
Fair enough; It's their technology. Sometimes though, people want different things. Glad to see quite a few people here want the same as me.

I have no idea what a Banana-TV is but for all that you want to do, an Airport Express it seems would do the trick. Is an Airport Express much more expensive than your Banana-TV?

Banana TV is software. It is $7.99. It makes your Mac act like an Apple TV - does not support audio only though.
It does something like: I can stream a video i just shot from my iPhone to my huge iMac screen - no AppleTV needed, no need to transfer the video to the iMac, no cables.
Now tell me this is not a better solution for casual use than having an AppleTV in terms of money, space, energy, hardware. You see, I don't even have a TV!

Ummm, what is so hard to grasp about using stuff when NOT AT HOME???? Why is being at home the focal point for you? Why do you assume that people and myself are only going to listen to music when at home? People do it away from home too. Also, I do use WiFi at home. I still have all my music and such stored locally. I have three running copies for one reason....HDD failure. Now, HDDs are inside the space available inside my PC tower so its like they're not even there. So you're right, this wouldn't be for me. Why should I have to pay AT&T more money just because Apple may potentially shake it all up. Nah uh....no way.

people are complaining about data usage....how much time do you spend at home vs. on the go? i have unlimited so doesn't matter to me. I also, don't own cd's/dvds/blu rays and don't even own a dvd player. physical media is slowing dying. I've been waiting for something like this forever. For someone like you, you are eventually going to have to adopt or live in old age technology.
