I discussed much of this in the original page 2 thread, but all the Apple Pro software exists to sell the expensive top of the line hardware. The philosophy behind Aperture is fantastic for photographers, although the beta version called 1.0 had far too many blemishes.
Regarding Aperture v2, in the last 10 months I'm sure that the development team has finally debugged the memory leaks and redesigned the database / keyword functions so these are quicker. I also expect the ability to support multiple libraries across different drives. Plus the "new" features that they will surprise us with!
Despite it's obvious flaws, I've gambled on Aperture 1.x because I expected the company that improved FCP v1 to do the same thing to Aperture v1.
Since it's designed to decode RAW files on the fly, the $300 program Aperture exists because Apple wants its users to go to buy a $10,000 computer to use it on (MP 3 GHz, 8GB RAM, 4x 500 GB HDs, X1900 XT graphics, and a 30" Apple DIsplay). Add another $1400 for the in the Quadro FX 4500!
Apple is making a bundle on these machines, and they want to WOW the press and "hog the spotlight" before the start of the show. Then all the attendees will be sure to visit the Apple booth and watch Aperture decode RAW files on the fly from a library of 25,000 RAW images.
Then hopefully they'll head home and spend lots of hard earned cash on new expensive MBP systems.

I assume the screen would be a touch screen. I would hate to start dialing numbers using the click wheel.
I think it would be kinda cool in a retro way. Just put the numbers on the click wheel. while most people just select the person on the list. which the iPod are really good at.

That'd be very nice, but I think that's too niche for Apple to get into. Although Apple does take its photography seriously, it only really produces hardware that is versatile and can be used for many different tasks - i.e. although the Mac Pro is serious photograhpy equipment, it can also be serious movie editing or CAD equipment. Infact, I can't think of any hardware made by Apple that is specifically photography directed.
Then again, there's nothing to say they won't break the habit of a lifetime.
While I have nothing to back up this idea beyond wild speculation, it makes sense if you think about it for a while.

The fact that few of it's users probably use it for Photos merely points out that it failed in it's targeted market for a number of reasons (probably lack of easy uploading from cameras when not at a computer, small screen, and lack of support for RAW).
2. Apple's announcement a few days ago about the new iTunes store: (to quote Page 1) "TV shows will now be sold at 640x480 px h264. While the updated 5G iPods announced today will be able to play the new format, there has not been any indication from Apple of yet that the new shows will be playable on older 5G iPods. Apple's official knowledge-base article still states that h264-encoded movies must be 320 x 240 at 30 fps."
So why will Apple start selling a video size that isn't designed for the current iPod? While it could be for the "iTV" device, I'd image that is a bit too small a resolution to get people excited about. And even if it is, why start selling it 6 months before the device ships?

If Apple was to introduce a new Video iPod with a larger screen, this new larger box would allow a number of things that can''t fit on a small iPod and are perfect for both video AND photography - a large 640 x 480 screen, FW or USB2 connections, and potentially CF/SD card slots (or at least an IO for a fast adapter via the USB2 connection.)
Hence my conclusion (based on pure speculation) - all these things point to a dual use device. Handheld, but larger than normal iPods, and suitable for both consumer video playback AND photography.
What better place to introduce this than the biggest consumer photo show in the world?

For iTV, you need a computer with a large HD, a home network, a TV with HDMI or component video input and an iTV.

No 'productivity' applications, pure entertainment. No worries about backups. No worries about anti-virus.
An entertainment appliance.
Better yet, an entertainment appliance that plays well in a world where more and more people, not just the professionals, are providing content.
The internet today is full of wonderful, bizarre, informative, dull, sick, funny, sad and entertaining things, that require some effort to find. It's a constant battle to stay on top of the latest sites, find the coolest links, etc.

I'm not sure the pros will lose the DVD drive. It'll encroch into MBA territory and pros are meant more for industry use where the drives are useful.

13 needs a better screen though. I've just bought my first 13 MBP and the soft resolution is a bit disappointing.

Apple is trying to sell these MacBooks to everyone, not just pros. It's the internet and App store are capable of doing the exact same thing as DVDs (for most computer purposes). For everything else, buy the external superdrive. 15% of MBP customers might need a DVD drive, but we know Apple isn't going to ignore the 85% who don't.
Those who don't want the superdrive have the option of an air. People in the music industry will always have a use for CD's. I just think no superdrive makes it an air varient not a pro.

Sure it's a nice phone. My dad had it for about a week. He ended up returning it beacuse of the really bad battery life. It lasted not even a day. He's on his phone a large portion of the day because he owns a business. He returned it and ended up getting some other nokia can't remmebr the number.
I like the 8801, but I definitely think it's overpriced at $399. You could get a Sidekick 3 prepaid for that price.

Or would they just make the message for fun? We all know what funny guys malware writers are.
It doesn't matter if it hasn't propagated, it never even would have happened in the past. The more malware attacks there are on the Mac, the greater the chance of one of them actually becoming a widespread nuisance.

To suggest that the people of Africa deserve to be wiped out by aids as they haven't evolved or kept up with the rest of the world is beyond contempt. I want to say something else but I'm just totally lost for words by your comments.
I notice no one has commented on the Pope and the Catholic Church forbidding the use of condoms and the effect that has on spreading infection even further.
Forget about the donation that will be made for every sale. Far more important is the number of people that will be educated on life in third world countries as a result of the promotion. We could do with a lot more companies running similar initiatives.
Its a bit sad that people are more interested in a new nano, or a core duo 2 macbook than they are in all the people that die every second of every day. Deaths that the western world could do something about but chooses not to. I for one am ashamed that we do so little to help so many people that suffer so much.

You want HD quality downloads but you can "stick" with DVD's? Do you understand how much information there is for a HD movie? Try one of the new disc formats, but you want to be able to download it? Crazy!
It's actually very possible to download HD content if Apple adopts a shared-bandwidth system like BitTorrent. It was rumored that they might do so. I download HD TV shows all the time - and it's fast and they're gorgeous.

I agree that app store is a very generic term, but in order to avoid all the legal troubles and the money and time lost, why not just create your own name?
As someone mentioned earlier, Android did it, and I have never told someone to go to the app store on an Android phone.
I always direct them to the Android Market.

From what I'm reading only GSM devices do this - so if you have the WiFi it is probably not doing it.
My iPad2 is a 3G one so should track wherever.

No one else has yet mentioned that the Airport Extreme is currently reflecting a 1-3 week shipping period (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/1.RSLID?mco=B842E400&nplm=M8799LL%2FA), while the Airport Express (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/1.RSLID?mco=7D88DA55&nplm=M9470LL%2FA) still says it will ship within 24 hours on the Apple Store Online. It would seem that it is the Extreme and not the Express to be getting the update.

Apple did just very recently file for a new iMovie trade mark in Europe, through Italy. They already had the name registered in 2000/2001. This new application is from 22 August, and no real details are currently published.
How does trademarking work in Europe? Here in the US you trademark something, and you don't have to specify what industry its in, or what the trademark is used for. in Europe do you have to register it for each unique industry? Otherwise, why would they be reapplying if they already have it?

I came to the opposite conclusion....
Running many compute-bound single-threaded benchmarks and apps - I saw how NT (pre Win2k) would balance across CPUs (that is, a "100%" compute-bound job would show each CPU running at 50%).
However, setting affinity so that one CPU was 100% and the other was 0% had no significant effect on the run times. (And by "significant" I mean statistically significant - I literally ran hundreds of runs in each configuration.)\\
By the way, with Win2k3 (and XP 64-bit, really the same system) you see much less "balancing" - a single-threaded app will stick to a CPU for much longer.
I suspect if any observable difference occurs depends upon the application, dataset, etc.
I'm guessing the 50% "balanced" method was done to try and keep a single CPU from heating up too much, and with the advent of multicore systems, it probably no longer matters which core is generating the heat due to them being in a single package.
It could also be MS found that certain circumstances (like mine) resulted in improvements in processing.
Interesting stuff.
